On Sunday Meg and I went to our first taiko practice all the way out to Kuroki Elementary School. That in of itself was a treat because (1) it's absolutely gorgeous out there with the lucious green mountains -- truly the inaka (country side) of Omura, (2) I finally got to see the dam, which actually is reserves for Nagasaki city!, and (3) I've never been to that side of Omura -- which made my weekend a very adventurous one with lots of new sites to behold.
Ok, so a little bit about taiko drums. It's a lot harder than it looks. It's more than just keeping the rhythm and knowing the song. The right arm has to be extended in the air if it's not hitting the drum or doing a quick series of hits with the left arm. The left arm, likewise, usually is positioned where your left fist rests on your right shoulder. Also, every time your right arm hits the drum, you have to do a mini squat. So, let's just say with all of that going on, I was having a hard time following. My left arm wouldn't move and when it did, it would just stay by the drum instead of going back to my right shoulder. My right arm wouldn't go up in the air like it was supposed to. And of course the mini squats weren't really in sync either. Lots to do all at once! But, I feel like it's like typing or anything that takes a lot of practice. My arms will get used to moving in those patterns. Here's to more practicing and making my dream of playing the drums come true!!
This week is really odd for me. Today is Wednesday and I have no school because this weekend is the prefecture-wide sports tournament. On Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, I will be cheering on the basketball team, kendo team, and track and field team (in that order). I'm excitied because I don't have to sit in the teacher's room for three straight days! haha. Then tomorrow I won't go to school because I have no classes and if there's one thing that I can't handle anymore is sitting at my desk for almost 8 hours with nothing to do. I'd rather be cleaning my apartment than sitting at my desk. So, a weekend in the middle of the week to make up for the week in the middle of the weekend! =)
Now I'm going to the store to look for cute summer dresses. *smile*
